What is Diabetes?
Diabetes mellitus, often simply called diabetes, is a complex condition including metabolic abnormalities that result in excessively high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia). Normally, blood glucose levels are controlled by the interaction of several nutrients and hormones (insulin) in the body. The cause of hyperglycemia is most often caused by defects in either insulin secretion or insulin action (resistance) and is most often combined with a deficiency of specific basic nutrients that are vital in regulating glucose metabolism.
Due to the cause of hyperglycemia, diabetes is either called type 1 or type 2. Type 1 diabetes is caused by a reduced production of insulin in the pancreas, whereas type 2 is caused by resistance to insulin's effects.
The combination of oxidative stress, chronic inflammation and low blood concentrations of certain nutrients (chromium, magnesium, zinc and vitamin C), seem to be a significant risk factor in the development of type 2 diabetes.
Treatment should therefore focus on compensating for the lack of nutrients as well as reducing oxidative stress and chronic inflammation.
